Notebooks received from donors, 1846-1930.

Series 3 of record group RG 81-69 consists of notebooks received from donors (1846-1930). These volumes were not prepared by the Michigan Geological Survey, but were given to the Survey for safekeeping or references purposes. The first set of notebooks are from the Detroit, Mackinac & Marquette Railroad Company of trackage in the eastern Upper Peninsula. The second set of notebooks are of George and Luther Emerson, who played important roles in the development of the Ontonagon mineral district. These include profiles of ore excavations, horizontal plans of mining levels, perspective drawings of improvements at certain locations, descriptions of operations, road surveys and cross-sections, calendars of activities, and lists of subscribers to the Lake Superior miner. Together, these volumes offer a great deal of data on certain early extractive industries in the Upper Peninsula copper belt. The third set of notebooks are from the Hiawatha Development Company, of it's properties in the eastern Upper Peninsula. Other notebooks were donated by John Livingston (Ontonagon Plank Road), Elisha Morcom (Menominee River Railroad, iron mines, and property ownership), and Daniel Springer (survey of tracks of the L'Anse & Ontonagon Railroad Company). The record group also includes two volumes prepared for the Isaac Stephenson Company, a lumbering enterprise headquartered in Wisconsin, of geological surveys of it's lands.

56 volumes.

The Michigan Geological Survey was created by Public Act 20 of 1837. Its purpose was to conduct a geological and mineralogical survey of the state. The state legislature appointed Douglass Houghton the first state geologist (1837). In 1921, the state legislature established the Department of Conservation, and the Michigan Geological Survey became part of that department (Public Act 17 of 1921). The Department of Conservation established the Geological Survey Division circa 1947. In 1968, the dep...
